Answer: The shopping cart automatically scales then stores images when uploaded, so original image size doesn't really matter as the system will resize images automatically.

Note: Please use image sizes closer to 250 pixels square when uploading, as massive files (1000+ pixels or several megs in size) will take a long time to process. If you rightclick image files then choose "edit" you should get the windows picture editor, where you can resize images. Consult the windows help resource for details on doing that.

Also, you can get a much better effect by sizing your images before uploading so you don't rely on the automatic squishing on upload (rectangular images will be made square, which could look unusual if the original image is far from square in proportion). The actual sizes vary from category to item areas. A little experimentation can really help your shopping cart zing!
